Rest

As the evening darkens

The light changes, and the atmosphere with it.

While it brews 5-7 minutes

There is a particular point when daylight begins to reflect back from the windows and the overhead light suddenly feels too bright. Curtains soften the room; a lamp gathers the light into one place.

Changing the light is one of the quickest ways to alter the character of a familiar room. The edges become quieter, glass reflects the interior and the house begins to feel held apart from the street outside.

The ritual

The change can be as simple as switching off the overhead light, turning on a lamp, drawing the curtains or lighting a candle. There is still enough light for whatever comes next, but the room no longer belongs to the daytime.

Variations

A clear pool of light for reading, a candle at dinner or the last of the daylight. The aim is not darkness; it is a visible change in the room.
