Rest

Closing down the house

A final round of the rooms before the day is finished.

A proper pause 15-20 minutes

Before electric light, late-night messages and work carried between rooms, the end of the day was easier to see. Fires were tended for the night, doors secured and lamps put out. The house visibly changed state.

Modern homes rarely close all at once. A cup remains on the desk, one bright light stays on and tomorrow begins accumulating before today has properly ended. Closing down the house gives the active day a practical ending without requiring everything to be immaculate.

The ritual

One circuit of the room or home. An abandoned cup returns to the kitchen, a light no longer needed is switched off, the door is checked or one small thing is left ready for morning. Then the rest of the evening can begin.

Variations

It may be one room rather than the whole house. Two or three actions can be enough. This is a closing signal, not a requirement to tidy everything before you rest.
